Animal Specimens Available

In the business of procuring animals for laboratory tests and medical research or educational purposes there is a complex commercial network. Not only is the main focus upon getting living animals known as ‘products’ to use in trials and experimentation but there are many other needs such as equipment, special transport facilities and others which have contributed to what is known as an ‘industry’.

One company offering Animal Services states that they can “procure cats, guinea pigs, cane toads and a range of other species from around Australia and internationally, as required.”  Some companies have established breeding facilities in order to guarantee supply of commonly required specimens.

Brochures claim that agistment properties are available to provide accommodation for sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, non-human primates and exotic species such as cane toads. If it were less serious an issue for the animals involved, one could give a wry smile.

The need to re-examine what we allow to occur in the name of science has been highlighted by many animal rights groups, humane individuals and organizations. Their objections will be needed to continue as long as present methods are permitted as acceptable in the community.

Recent public uproar at the degree of cruelty used by Indonesian methods of slaughtering live cattle exported from Australia was a strong reaction but unfortunately does not seem to have been maintained. It is likely that only mild reform measures will be implemented before resumption of trade.

Public feeling was offended by explicit imagery on TV of ‘unspeakable cruelty’ inflicted on cattle ‘processed’ in the abattoirs. If explicit imagery of what occurs in medical laboratories were shown on TV would the people feel compassion, guilt or outrage that we can use and abuse animals in these ways?  Whereas it may be difficult to suggest that there is any really kind way to kill an animal, we certainly know that deliberate torture is unacceptable in anyone’s terms.

Some medical research companies are finding alternatives to the outmoded techniques still being used in laboratories in the name of science today when millions of animals each year are sacrificed. We would hope such advanced reforms will come speedily…for the sake of all animals.
