Animals in Medical Tests – The Alternatives
For many decades the public has generally accepted the premise that medical experimentation, surgical testing and drug tests are essential on animals in order that our doctors can improve human health. The practices have been allowed in spite of the minority who first protested that the methods are unethical and inflict cruelties upon the animal kingdom. Early protestors were vocal in their objections to anti-vivisection and have continued in society as a continuing voice for animal protection and animal welfare.
Instead of ignoring or denying the issues raised by those who love animals we must recognize and debate all aspects associated with the use and abuses of living creatures for what is now perceived as of questionable value. It is time to reconsider what we humans have chosen to do and are continuing to do in the name of scientific advancement in human health and reassess both our motives and our methods as well as the sacrifices that involve the lives of millions of creatures who are certainly not willing participants. Our role as protectors and superior creatures on our planet has failed on this matter.
If we cannot in our society apply principles that embrace all creatures we must be seen as guilty of unreasonable and unscientific practices; of hypocrisy that scorns general animal care but allows indulgence of domestic pets.
Regarding the question of value of laboratory tests on animals it is obvious that amongst laboratory workers, scientists , chemists, cage manufacturers, drug companies and all those engaged in the industry that retention of their jobs is uppermost. We must rely upon the research scientists who are not in the employ of those whose influence will affect their findings and this is not easy in the commercial world.
However there are many researchers true to their science who are questioning, investigating and reassessing the whole subject, particularly the urgent priority as to the validity of animal tests in determining what is safe for humans. It seems there is much evidence of substances tested safely on animals yet proven to be dangerous to humans and also vice versa. This strongly indicates a need for change.
Alternatives to animal testing range from cell and tissue cultures of human cell tests that promise accuracy in predicting toxicity in humans that are far superior to animal tests, to the latest sophisticated techniques using computerised models. Should we determine to give up animal sacrifice for the technological path, animals of the world rejoice!
