Mining the Seas for Gold
There have been many scientists and philosophers over the last couple of centuries who have proposed ‘lateral’ ideas about using the abundant wealth of seawater as the source from which we ‘mine’ and withdraw the minerals and elements we need or want. There exist many present day scientists who are interested or intrigued with the idea of finding a technology that would allow commercial practicality and application.
Because of some diminishing land stocks, the idea offers a possibility of an exciting alternative approach to all mining in the future.
To this point there has been considerable interest and discussion amongst scientists but few examples of any successful application of present technology. One is Mexico where the extraction of gold from salt is already functioning.
It will probably be just a matter of time before an efficient process is recognized. In the meantime flashes of new ideas continue to surface including one intriguing idea of utilizing the present ship traffic over the world to extract gold from the seawater via their propellers using a new technique, as ships progress over the oceans.
The subject is of considerable interest to ecologists, oceanographers, miners and of course to scientists in general who must overcome any obstacles that prevent the idea of mining seawater becoming a viable practical process.
We all are fascinated by the allure of gold, the precious and sacred metal and will await developments with interest.
