Our Old, Old Solar System
News published in Nature Geoscience, written by Audrey Bouvier and Mennakshi Wadhwa of the Arizona State University’s Centre for Meteorite Studies tells us of the astonishing age of our Solar System.
We have always understood our Sun and the planets were born billions of years ago with an approximation being in a range of four billion.
However, tests following a find of a 1.49 kg meteorite in the desert of Morocco in 2004 now tell us the analysis of the meteorite component of lead isotopes shows its age as 4.45682 billion years. It is claimed then to be the oldest object ever found and who are we to challenge this?
It also indicates that our Solar System must be nearly 2 million years older than previously thought.
Although there are varying opinions about the Sun’s birthday, with figures sometimes given as 4.5 and 4.6 we must give it our respect and conclude that we live in a very, very old Solar System.
