Touch Screens — The Future
We have become fascinated by the technology that results in ‘touch technology’ that is fast and addictive. All IT instruments are likely to demand the inclusion of this new ability that alters our involvement by changing from pressing buttons to gliding our fingers over a screen. Whether we are more likely to make mistakes is a question to ponder.
Many are finding it not only acceptable as an alternative method in computer use but are developing an appetite for it and want more, more, more.
But the magic materials that have been used so far in bringing this new technique are rather diminishing in availability and becoming less, less, less. That is, until alternatives are found to the metallic oxides, indium and other by products identified and used now for manufacturing needs.
Sometimes new things are developed to advance to satisfy a need and sometimes just result from rather random experimentation. In this case do we need to have faster and more satisfying tactile instruments and playthings? Or are we developing an insatiable consumer greed that can never be fully satisfied and so cause us to be enslaved instead of being served with the answer to a real need ?
So another generation of old screens will continue to pollute the rubbish dumps and we will enjoy the liquid crystal screens while we may – that is, until we count the cost.
There is a real place for caution.
