Unspeakable Cruelties
Indonesia is in the news in Australia with the revelation that cattle sent live to that nation have been, and no doubt would be inclined to continue, suffering what are described as ‘unspeakable cruelties’ in the processing system of the Indonesian abattoirs.
The images and the factual accounts obtained confirm that these cruelties inflicted on our animals are not exaggerated. Any reasonable farmer would be inflamed to think that this could be a fate for his animals but the reaction was much greater – the whole Australian community was aghast at what was inflicted in tortures and pain and in one voice were in accord with banning any further livestock until there was a guaranteed change and improvement in the slaughtering system.
Others became suddenly aware of the cruel system we have generally neglected to observe in the whole cattle industry as it is called in our own country. Only those who are genuinely concerned that as human beings we are custodians of animals in the evolutionary scale – and not inflictors of suffering, will retain any sudden social realization about animals and their care that now applies to public awareness and attitude. We hope that there will be considerable reform where it is necessary everywhere and a ‘compassion farming’ principle applied beyond any temporary inflammatory situation.
Thanks should go to all the Animal Rights movements responsible for action that will motivate change and for all individuals who commit to not only urging cessation of cruelty; to finding alternatives in animal husbandry, of food supply and demand; and replace present human nutrition that includes meat, with quality fresh natural alternative products. It would be an improvement to think of a better and kinder approach to survival without having to kill to survive in the future.
Most of us, if we had to kill an animal and prepare it for our food would reject it. Allowing others to do the deed for us, does not free us from our moral responsibility in the deed.
What happened to the law “thou shalt not kill!”
Is there a humane way to kill?
