Woes of the World

If we were to entertain a visitor from another planet at this juncture, what would we communicate about the present woes on our home planet Earth?

Apart from the obviously different degrees of anxiety we may personally hold, there are issues upon which most of us would agree as affecting us all and are doing damage to the whole globe.

Can our planet’s problems be solved?

Some of our chronic woes remain as they have been for centuries…wars, violence, criminality, imbalance between rich and poor, industry and utility, production and consumption and unstable government.

Acute problems of our era accent fear and insecurity.  The causes include the world’s diminishing natural resources; materialism that pushes us far beyond need into greed; absence of positive community or national planning in which we are voluntarily and vitally involved; no shared vision and purpose to motivate us co-operatively; an increasing incapacity to care for those in ill health and poverty; failure in dealing with negative factors, whether of the outer natural environment or critical social issues. All these issues exacerbated by a plague of depression and mental diseases leading to personal addictions.

We are not a happy and contented race of people. In the developed countries there a large numbers of busy, affluent but unhappy people. Many have weakened to allow chronic states of mental depression to sweep away any positives in life and so are becoming a drain upon the mental health of the whole community.

Millions of people are caught in state of insecurity because of the huge changes that just keep happening – whether through nature’s unpredictable events or by man created concerns that are economic, political, environmental, or health and increasingly advancing problems that are proving to be national and international issues.

Is there a simple remedy?  Can we feel better if each of us resolves to act in correcting just one of the issues we feel important?
